App Review: Digg for Android

Digg users with Android devices, who might have been feeling a little left out after the recently launched iPhone/iPod Digg app, now have one of their own.

The good news is that it’s free. The bad news is that it’s not packing as many features.

Digg’s Android app which went live in the Android Market Friday has the same interface as the iPhone app and offers a quick way to view and sort through the stories on Digg.com.

Across the top of the app you’ll see tabs for top, recent, and upcoming stories on Digg.  When you click on a headline you’ll be taken to the story where you’ll see a little chat bubble in the upper right corner that tells you how many comments have been made on each story.

What’s missing? There’s no way to save articles for later reading, share on Facebook or Twitter the way you can from the native browser, or have a Digg link set to open in your Android browser of choice.  One thing I find annoying is that there’s no place to log-in within the app, there’s no settings, nothing when you hit menu except a refresh button. Wonder why they didn’t include the log-in ability in the app, maybe it was a rushed release?

One thing we Android users get over iPhone users is landscape mode, this comes in handy, when text, titles or pictures are cut off in portrait mode.

All in all it’s a good app, although I’d like to see a couple of things added in a future version of the app like the ability to log-in to your Digg account, a way to submit content from your phone to Digg, the option to open stories in your Android browser of choice, and possibly a home screen widget with some top stories.

What do you think?  Have you used the app?  What features would you like to see added to future iterations?

TweetDeck Coming to Android

The folks over at TweetDeck announced today via their official Twitter account that a version of their popular Twitter client is coming to Android and Blackberry.

I use TweetDeck on my Mac on every day, and in my opinion, it’s the best Twitter client available on the market. Naturally I’m excited to see TweetDeck coming to Android. Hopefully all the desktop features are coming to the Android version.

No release date or timeframe was mentioned.

Review: Swype for Android

There are a ton of keyboard replacements apps out there, some good, some not so good.  Swype is one of the greats.  It’s easy to use and increases your touchscreen typing speed to blazingly fast.  No more tappity tap tap tap to put your thoughts into words.

Swype isn’t just any keyboard replacement program, it’s revolutionizing the way we interact with and enter text on our favorite touchscreen device.   If you were one of the lucky one’s and got in on the beta program you know what I’m talking about, if you weren’t you can swing over to Swype and put your name on the list.

Swype works with the on-screen QWERTY keyboard on your Android device, but instead of tapping letters out, you touch the first letter of the word you’re going to type without lifting your finger, move it to the remaining letters in the word, when finished remove your finger from the screen.

Skype Mobile App Review

For years I have used Skype on my computer to instant message, voice and video chat with friends and family all across the country. Just this past week Skype released a mobile version of their software to be used with Android phones that are on the Verizon Wireless network. The app is free and can be found in the market as of last Thursday. The new app has a similar look and feel when compared to the version downloadable for the Mac.

There are three different screens, “contacts”, “events” and “call phones”. The contacts page is fairly self-explanatory, showing b Read more…

SlideIT Lite App Review

There has been great debate over which style of keyboard is best on a cell phone, which is the most user friendly. Some believe “real” keys are the most reliable for texting but others have found touchscreen keyboards to be just as good, if not better. Several Android apps give the option to install a new touch keyboard onto your phone to be used instead of the standard, native keyboard. One such app, SlideIT (that’s a capital “it” by the way) combines some nice features that enhance the native Android touch keyboard. Read more…
