Is Motorola Breaking Up with Google?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha said if he had the R&D budget, Motorola would develop its own mobile operating system.

The company also showed support for Windows 7 that Microsoft unveiled earlier this week. Motorola said now that Windows 7 is a clean new OS, it just may adopt it for some of its devices, as opposed to primarily supporting Google Android, which is the complete opposite of what they said when they debuted the Verizon Droid. In fact Motorola had stopped producing Windows Mobile smartphones in favor of devices that run Google’s Android OS. Read more…

Motorola CLIQ-XT Coming to T-Mobile

CLIQ-XT is a keyboardless alternative to the existing Motorola CLIQ. Like the CLIQ, the XT runs the Android 1.5 operating system (it’s sad that it’s running 1.5 would have expected at least 1.6), using Motorola’s MOTOBLUR UI to keep your friends, pics, emails, SMS, Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter happenings only a finger tap away.

The XT has a 3.1-inch, 320-by-480 screen touch-screen, below the screen, a touch pad helps you navigate the device. According to Motorola the CLIQ-XT improves call quality with dual-microphone noise cancellation. Other specs include a 1420 mAh battery for about six hours of 3G talk time, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, assisted GPS, a 5-megapixel camera, and a MicroSD memory card slot.

The Motorola CLIQ-XT arriving next month on T-Mobile’s U.S. network.

Motorola’s Android 2.1 Update Schedule

After prematurely announcing the release of the Android 2.1 update for the Motorola Droid this week, Motorola has broken their silence and posted an update schedule for all their Android devices.  Unfortunately for Droid owners there’s still no official time line other than coming soon.  We all know coming soon can mean tomorrow or next year.

What do you think, will we see an update for the Droid sooner rather than later?

Motorola Suffers From Premature Release

We reported to you yesterday that Motorola announced via their Facebook page that starting this week Droid users would start seeing the update to Android 2.1, well looks like that was a little premature on Motorola’s part.

According to Matt the forum manager over at the Motorola Owners’ Forum that announcement was a tad premature.  Here’s what he had to say:

Well that was apparently clear as mud because he followed up with this:

People over on the owners’ forum are a tad bit upset and rightly so, the way this has been handle by both Motorola and Verizon is pathetic. Will Droid owners be getting the Android 2.1 update this week or not? No one really knows as all communication from Motorola and Verizon about the update has ceased flowing.  What’s interesting is the fact that Motorola hasn’t updated their Facebook page to reflect the new information.

See what was supposed to come with the update after the jump Read more…

Motorola Cliq Available to New T-Mobile Customers for $9.99

Available Through WireFly

The Motorola Cliq was $199 when it debuted a few short months ago, but right now you can get the Motorola Cliq for just $9.99 shipped with a new 2-year T-Mobile contract through WireFly.  You’re limited to the titanium Cliq and you’ll be charged a $35 activation.  If you’re an existing T-Mobile customer you’re out of luck, you’ll be parting with $149.99 of your hard earned cash.

However, if you’ve been thinking of jumping to T-Mobile and were eyeing an Android device now may be the time to take that leap, $140.00 is a pretty major savings.

The Cliq runs Android OS 1.5, but here’s good news: rumor has it Motorola will offer an upgrade to Android 2.0.

Motorola Poised to Take Top Android Device Maker Spot From HTC

According to the folks over at Digitimes Research, Motorola is poised to take the top spot as the world’s top vendor of Android-powered handsets away from HTC this year .  Moto’s shipments of Android phones will account for a 34.7% share of the segment compared to HTC’s 31.9%.

HTC ended last year with six million Android phones shipped, making the company the number one vendor with a market share of 64.5% share. However, Motorola was able to move 2 million Droid/Milestone unites — or 25% of global Android phone sales — in less than three months. And since the Droid introduction, the American company has also released other Android models with plans to launch a total of 30 Android phones in 2010. Digitimes believes this strategy could help Motorola eventually ship a total of 12.5-15.6 million units by the end of the year. At the same time, total sales of Android smartphones are expected to reach 35-36 million units.

We’re certainly happy to see Motorola get back to the game and we’re looking forward to seeing their upcoming products.

Motorola Devour Making Its Way to the Market

The good folks over at Android Central had this dropped in their laps today. At first they claimed it was the retail box, kind of big compared to the small packaging of today’s phones.

Later they edited their post stating what we’re looking at isn’t the retail box, but the box for a pre-release demo unit shipped out to Verizon store managers as a sneak peak. There may very well be a Droid Devour tucked within that cardboard cage, but the box probably won’t look anything like that if you pick one up for yourself.

Demo units or at least marketing materials shipped and a listing in Verizon’s inventory systems can only mean one thing, we can’t be more than a few weeks away from launch.

Are you going to be devouring the Devour?
