Video: Verizon’s Droid Eris Spotted Running Android 2.1
Last week we told about about a few Verizon customers receiving Android 2.1 updates to their Droid Eris, today we bring a video of the Eris running Android 2.1. Last week Verizon claimed that the update had not been released and was still in being tested, which begs the question is this an official release or is the person testing Android 2.1 for Verizon. Either way this bodes well for Verizon Eris customers and points to a sooner rather than later release.
We say sooner rather than later because it appears from the video below that Android 2.1 is running smoothly on on the Eris. What do you think is a release imminent? Sound off in the comments.

Verizon Droid Eris 2.1 Update Official Roll Out or Action of a Rogue Employee?
Word around the interwebs seems to indicate that Verizon has started rolling out the Android 2.1 update to the Droid Eris.
HTC confirmed yesterday via their Twitter account that the Droid Eris would in fact be receiving the update to 2.1, which was good news to Eris users who previously were told they were only being updated to 2.0.
Apparently the update doesn’t come without issues. Updaters are reporting Google Sync issues, data being erased, and no update to HTC’s Sense UI. We strongly recommend you backup all your data and remove your SD card before proceeding with the update if you receive a notification on your Eris. Read more…

Nine Verizon Phones to Get Unlimited Skype Calling
Nine Verizon smartphones with data plans will be able to make unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls, as well as calls to landline or mobile numbers.
The partnership brings Skype to both Blackberry and Android platforms on Verizon Wireless, which will start selling devices with Skype pre-installed in March . Skype over 3G will allow international calls at rates unavailable from traditional wireless carriers.
For example, calling Australia on Skype will cost $0.021 per minute, Verizon charges $0.17. The Verizon rate is over eight times the rate offered by Skype assuming the you’re paying the $3.99 monthly fee for an international calling plan. Without the plan, you’ll pay a whopping, $1.66 per minute. Read more…

What’s Up with Verizon’s Sexist Ad Campaigns
First we had the Droid and it’s manly man reference, not to mention they called the iPhone a digitally clueless beauty pageant queen. Which for the record I thought was kind of funny. Now we have the Palm Pre Plus in all its housewife beauty.
Their new Palm Pre Plus commercial just might get some of the women’s rights groups up in arms. Read more…

Verizon Welcomes Motorola Devour to the Android Family
Today via press release Verizon Wireless announced the addition of the Motorola Devour to their Android line-up. They really haven’t told us anything about the device we don’t already know.
One downside: Reports suggest the Devour will ship with Android 1.6 rather than the more recent Android 2.1 release that debuted on the Nexus One or even the Android 2.0 release introduced with the Droid. Motorola has yet to confirm this.
If the Devour does ship with Android 1.6, one would imagine that a 2.1 update would be rolled out at some point in the coming months. With that said, Verizon and Motorola have yet to update any other Android handsets to 2.0 or 2.1, so it’s tough to say how long the wait might be. Read more…

Verizon Lowers Plan Costs, But Still Doesn’t Beat Sprint
The phone and tech forums are heating up with much debate over the recently announced price drops by Verizon and AT&T. The reviews are in and boy are they mixed.
TrendyProfessional1 over on the Crackberry Forums had this to say about Verizon’s price drops:
“If this is true; I’m lovin it.”
EnergyPlus also from Crackberry opted to speak to Verizon directly, with the help of a Verizon representative they figured out the new price points will actually cost them an additional $10 per month:
Just got off the phone with VZW. My current plan, which provides 900 minutes + unlimited data, is running me $90/mo. Based on what we (VZW and me) figured out, I’m better off staying with what I have. It appears though, that NEW customers will be paying $100/mo for the same thing!
While jetman1287 also from Crackberry laid out the reality behind Verizon’s new plans:
While they are indeed lowering the prices of some of the most expensive plans (which probably carry a larger profit margin to begin with), it is hiding the big $$$ secret that will kill many new phone purchases, or in the least **** people off.
Starting Monday, Verizon is going to REQUIRE $10/month, or $240/2-yr contract for 25MB of data. There are MANY problems with this.

AT&T and Verizon Wireless Announce Plan Price Changes
Well it’s been a busy day for carriers, both AT&T and Verizon are dropping prices on their rate plans, still not nearly as good as Sprint or T-Mobile’s offerings.
AT&T announced today that effective Monday it’s changing the cost of its smartphone plans. Here’s the scoop:
All smartphone customers, including iPhone customers, may now buy unlimited voice and data for $99.99. For smartphone customers with Family Talk plans (prices assume 2 smartphones), unlimited voice and data is now available for $179.99. Don’t get too excited AT&T’s texting plans remain unchanged at $20 for unlimited plans for individuals, $30 for Family Talk Plans.
The new calling plans, which take effect January 18th, will be renamed “Nationwide Talk” and “Nationwide Talk and Text.” Family options will be available as well, with unlimited talk and unlimited talk and text. As always with Verizon you’ll pay extra for data and e-mail. Overall, we’re not sure if non-unlimited, smartphone users will actually be affected. The details, as we see them:
- Current Basic plan is re-named Nationwide Talk
- Current Select plan is re-named Nationwide Talk & Text
- Unlimited plans will drop 30%, $69.99 for unlimited voice, $89.99 for unlimited voice+text
- Unlimited Family (2 lines) $119.99 for unlimited voice, $149.99 for unlimited voice+text, additional lines will ring in at $49.99 each
- $29.99 for unlimited data, $9.99 for 25MB
- 3G Smartphones will require $29.99 data, 3G Multimedia phones (dumbphones) will require $9.99 or higher data
Anytime a carrier reduces their plans it’s a good thing, not sure these reductions are enough to make a Sprint or T-Mobile customer jump shit for price alone. As always when selecting a carrier you should look at coverage and reliability first and foremost, cost and phone selection are interchangeable. What good is the latest and greatest phone if you can’t use it in the areas your travel.
