Is Motorola Breaking Up with Google?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha said if he had the R&D budget, Motorola would develop its own mobile operating system.

The company also showed support for Windows 7 that Microsoft unveiled earlier this week. Motorola said now that Windows 7 is a clean new OS, it just may adopt it for some of its devices, as opposed to primarily supporting Google Android, which is the complete opposite of what they said when they debuted the Verizon Droid. In fact Motorola had stopped producing Windows Mobile smartphones in favor of devices that run Google’s Android OS.

Let’s face it until the introduction of the Droid Motorola has been a two hit wonder (StarTac and Razr).  Motorola needed something to put them back on the map and that something was Google and its Android OS.  There’s no denying that Motorola was saved by Google and the Android operating system, look at the boost in popularity they received being the first company to introduce a device running Android 2.0.  Now that they’re seeing a an upswing in revenue Motorola is slowly closing the door on Google and jumping back into bed with Microsoft.

You have to ask yourself were this leaves the Motorola Android customer.  Are they going to see continued updates or they going to be left with a device running a stagnant OS?  What does this mean for the rumored Motorola Nexus 2?  Unfortunately for Motorola there are too many unanswered questions and I can’t help but believe this announcement is going to affect the sales of recently announced Motorola Android devices.

I know I’m not interested in buying an Android device from a company  that is having second thoughts about Android.  What about you?  Do you feel confident that after purchasing an Android device from Motorola they’ll continue to support and update your device?
