Rumor: Sprint to Get Mac Daddy HTC Android WiMAX Device

Reports around the internet this morning are pointing to an inside source at Sprint who has confirmed that Sprint will be getting the Mac Daddy Android device of them all, made by HTC.  Could this be the WiMAX device hinted at by Clearwire CEO Bill Morrow?

Here’s what we know so far:

  • Codename is “Supersonic”
  • Feels a lot like you’d expect an Android-powered HD2 to feel thanks to a 4.3-inch non-AMOLED display and a svelte shell. (For reference, the HD2 is 11mm thick, but we don’t have exact dimensions here.)
  • It’s got a kickstand on the back. This wouldn’t be a first for HTC; the Imagio on Verizon has one, for example.
  • Runs Android 2.1 with HTC’s Sense UI.
  • Our tipster saw it in white; production devices could be available in different colors, of course, but white seems like it’d be an intriguing choice for a phone of the HD2′s size and shape.
  • The phone’s software stack is buggy enough right now to suggest that we’re not looking at a release any time soon, but we don’t have details on the projected launch window.
  • It’s fast — Snapdragon fast, it seems, though our tipster can’t confirm the processor under the hood.

Hopefully they do away with the kickstand, replace the trackball with an optical track pad or better yet a touch sensitive case, give it some kick-ass onboard memory say like 8, 16 or 32 gigs and make it available in a color other than white.

We reported the rumor back in October about the speculated early 2010 release of the HTC HD2 running Android on a CDMA carrier in the US, looks like that rumor wasn’t far off.  Now the question remains will this be a dual 3G/4G device or will it only run 4G and only be available in the 33 markets where Sprint has deployed their 4G network.

This is great news for the Sprint customers who are upset over what they see as a lack of cutting edge devices available through Sprint.  I imagine the only thing that would make Sprints clients happier would be the release this summer of the rumored CDMA iPhone.

What options would you like to see included, sound off in the comments.
