Google’s Android Market Hits 30,000 Apps
According to a report my Mobile Crunch a Google representative confirmed today that the Android Market offers 30,000 applications to those sporting Google Android devices.
“While Google doesn’t publicly show how many applications there are in Android Market, a Google representative this morning informed me that the application store now serves approximately 30,000 free and paid apps in total.” [via: Mobile Crunch]
The news comes three months after an AndroLib report said there were 20,000 apps available in the Android Market. However, Google officially reduced that number to 16,000 apps – this means about 14,000 apps have been added in the last three months.
Reportedly, about 60% of the apps currently available in Android Market are free, and about 40% are paid. With approximately 60,000 Android devices shipping per day and a steady increase of developers jumping on the Android wagon it’s possible we may see 100,000 apps in the market by years end.

MySpace Number One Social Application on Android
According to MySpace their mobile application is the number one downloaded social application in the Android Market and the third most popular Android application overall. MySpace attributes this success to the deep integration with the operating system. Our deep integration with the Android platform is one of the reasons why we’ve seen a surge in usage. Unique to this app, we have three home screen widgets. One of them allows voice-enabled status updates. We also allow users to set MySpace photos as background wallpaper on their phone’s home screen. Close integration with the native Android camera contributes to the customized experience and makes it easy for MySpace users to take, upload and share pictures of their friends out having fun.
Shocking news indeed, I was under the impression that MySpace was dying on the vine and was only popular with bands and perverts, does anyone really still use MySpace? Even more shocking is that MySpace is the fourth most popular mobile web destination according to a December 2009 Morgan Stanley report on The Mobile Internet.
It will be interesting to see if MySpace can hold-on to this title in next year.

Google To Open Android Business Market
Rumor has it that sometime this month Google will open an Android Market geared toward business, if done correctly this could be a good thing for consumers and developers.
My biggest complaint about the Android Market is that applications are accepted without any kind of review process. At first the zero application review sounds like a great idea, but you soon realize that quality or legitimacy of apps is greatly diminished without review. Remember the January bru-ha-ha surrounding the fraudulent banking apps?
Hopefully the new market will encourage application developers to deliver higher quality products, we’ve all installed and returned that app that just didn’t quite work as intended. With any luck the new market will weed out those who develop and submit faulty applications simply because they want to see their name in “lights.”
Will Google do it right, or simply rebrand the existing Android Market?

Ten Ways to Pimp Your Android Device
With Android phones being perhaps the most customizable smartphones around in all their open-source loveliness, we’ve come up with a selection of ways to personalize your Android phone, inside and out. So, let’s get creative and pimp those phones.
Slap on a new wallpaper
There’s a great selection of apps on the Android Market that offer tailored wallpapers for your Android phone, but it’s also pretty easy to make your own. For best results, make sure your image is as tall as the screen of your phone, pixel-wise. So, that’s 480 pixels for the old guard of Android, or 800 pixels for newbies like the Google Nexus One and Motorola Droid. Read more…
