HTC Passion Coming to Verizon for the Holidays?

We have heard rumors that HTC was planning their first Android 2.0 phone this holiday season. The HTC Passion/Dragon is supposedly sporting a 1 GHz Snapdragon platform and running Eclair. A tipster just gave us the heads up that htcpassion.com is now live. The website features the Verizon logo next to the word “passion” with the text “coming holidays 2009″.

I’m not entirely sure this is official, but it is definitely interesting.  If the website is in fact real we now know the true name of this elusive device.

A whois of the domain reveals:

What do you guys think? I’ve been waiting for a new HTC Android 2.0 phone to arrive. I might just have to drop Sprint and go with Verizon.  We have emailed HTC and Verizon Wireless PR to see if they will comment on this website. When we have a response, we will update this story.

Update 12:03am EDT: It looks like this might all be a hoax, the fax number which appears to be a voice/fax all-in-one type number comes back to a company by the name of “NameCheap.com,” which leads you to another company by the name of StartLogic.   Someone is going to an awful lot of trouble to bury their tracks.  My best advice if you’re on Verizon or were thinking about switching to Verizon for the HTC Passion/Dragon, don’t get  your hopes up just yet.

Android: Week in Review

Things have gotten so crazy in the word of Android over the last month or two that it can be difficult at times to simply keep up with a single day’s news.

Somehow, taking a look back at the rumors, leaks, launches, and reviews of the week has a way of putting things into perspective.  Since a bunch of you want the skinny, net results rather than a post on every whisper, Here we go.

GooglePhone
While still unresolved, the long-standing rumors and rebuttals of Google’s intention to get into the cell phone hardware game have recently grown to a deafening roar thanks to a couple of posts from TechCruch, which have been covered by myself here and here. Writing about the device as a sure thing has put all tech bloggers on alert. Let’s hope TC’s source is a strong as they think it is.

Samsung Behold II
The T-Mobile follow-up to the original Behold may not have seen enough change since it’s previous incarnation. This Android device feels TouchWizzy through and through and reactions to “The Cube” have been almost unanimously negative. Sammy did bring a nice drop-down notification bar enhancement to Android, and the media management is kinda cool. I’d just like to see those flipping Polaroids in a widget or something.

Motorola’s Motus – or is it Backflip?
What is widely viewed as the Cliq’s little brother should be launching in the first few months of next year, but don’t expect any major changes in the guts. Cliq and Backflip share the same father. The name – Backflip – apprently comes from the device’s hardware keyboard, which is attached to the screen panel facing opposite of the direction we’re used to. When the phone is closed, the keyboard is situated on the back of the phone. Confused? Check out a picture, and imagine you’re looking at the front and back covers of a book.

Rumor: HTC Working on a New flagship Android Device – The Dragon

htc-dragonWhat do you get when you mix HTC, Android, and Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon mobile processor together? According to the rumor mill, this mythical combination will yield…the HTC Dragon.

Based on the tip / leaked screenshots (below) over at DroidDog, all we know so far about this fantasy device is that it’s ‘model number’ is HTC Dragon. Supposedly, this work-in-progress could include a mighty 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, run Android 2.0 with HTC Sense, have a 480×800 capacitive touch screen display, and is expected to be a “GAME CHANGER” for HTC (and presumably Android as well).

Just imagine an incredibly thin device with a giant 4.3″ capacitive touch screen display like the HD2 and all of the benefits of Android 2.0 and a powerful 1Ghz processor. Throw in solid battery life and multiple carrier options, and there is no question that the Dragon would be a force to reckon with. You got this, HTC. Bring the Dragon to life!

More screen shots after the jump.

HTC Working on an Android Smartphone with 1 GHz Processor, and Large Screen

Evidence is mounting that HTC will soon release a new Android-based phone with a large touchscreen and a fast processor. According to unconfirmed reports, this model is headed for Verizon and will sport a wide array of high-end features.

Rumors say that this smartphone is code-named the HTC Passion. The actual name may be drawn from one of its features — this device will reportedly be based on Qualcomm’s 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, and the official name will supposedly be the HTC Dragon.

An Overview of the HTC Passion
HTC has drawn quite a bit of attention with the HTC HD2, a model that has an impressive collection of cutting-edge features. HTC’s CEO has gone on record saying that there won’t be an Android version of this device, but the Dragon will apparently be very close.

If the unconfirmed reports are correct, the Dragon will be the first Android smartphone running Qualcomm’s fastest smartphone chip. Sony Ericsson has announced a device with this processor, but HTC’s will supposedly be on the market first by a wide margin.

Like the HD2, it will supposedly have a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen and a 5 MPx camera. This smartphone will allegedly run Android 2.0 and have a microSD memory card slot and 3.5 mm headset jack.

If this really is an Android-based model, it will have a highly-functional web browser, and include tie-ins to a number of Google’s online services, like Gmail, Calendar, and Google Maps. It will also have access to thousands of third-party software apps available for this operating system.

Coming Next Month
Rumor says the HTC Passion/Dragon is going to be available in the middle of next month.

Exactly what Verizon will ask for this smartphone is not yet known.

We can only imagine it will look similar to this HTC HD2 that has had Android ported as its operating system, if this photo isn’t photoshopped it’s one sweet looking phone.

HTC Passion/Dragon Rumor DeBunked!

Looks like the boys over at Boy Genius Report and PhanDroid have been punked.   BGR first reported that the phone below is the HTC Passion/Dragon headed for Verizon in time for the holidays, PhanDroid picked up the story and ran with it also.   Thanks to the alert and eagle eyed reader who brought this to our attention.

bogushtc-dragon

If you ask me, this is the iPhone theme found here, notice the similarities?  Yellow lettering for the city and temperature.   The burden of proof in this situation is on the BGR Connect claiming that this picture came from a Verizon Android phone. The problem?  There is no proof provided, the photo doesn’t show the device or the carrier it’s running on. The fact that it looks identical to the iPhone theme is solid proof against this being the HTC Passion/Dragon running on Verizon, the picture is too neatly cropped to exclude telltale carrier information found in the status bar of most every phone on the market.   Want more proof?  HTC has maintained the look of their clock/weather widget across multiple platforms. If you believe HTC is going to redesign Sense for Android 2.0 based on an iPhone knock-off theme, I have some great beach front property in Arizona to sell you.
