HTC Responds to Apple’s Lawsuit

Apples lawsuit against HTC claims that HTC infringed on 20 Apple patents spanning a range of technologies. Five of the phones named in the complaint filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission–including the Nexus One, which is sold directly by Google–use the Android software, and seven use Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software.

“HTC disagrees with Apple’s actions and will fully defend itself. HTC strongly advocates intellectual property protection and will continue to respect other innovators and their technologies as we have always done,” said HTC Chief Executive Officer Peter Chou in a statement, “but we will continue to embrace competition through our own innovation as a healthy way for consumers to get the best mobile experience possible.”

“From day one, HTC has focused on creating cutting-edge innovations that deliver unique value for people looking for a smartphone,” Chou said. “In 1999 we started designing the XDA and T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition, our first touch-screen smartphones, and they both shipped in 2002 with more than 50 additional HTC smartphone models shipping since then.”

It appears from the above statement that part of HTC’s argument against the suit is in proving that HTC has been around much longer than Apple’s two-year old entry into the smartphone market. Hmm, depending on when the iPhone went into development it looks like Apple might be the one infringing on HTC.

HTC was founded in 1997 and produced its first smartphone for O2 in 2002, which had a 3.5-inch color touchscreen display. Work on that started as early as 1999, Chou argued. From there, it named a number of firsts: First Windows PDA (1998); First Windows Phone (June 2002); First 3G CDMA EVDO smartphone (October 2005); First gesture-based smartphone (June 2007); First Google Android smartphone (October 2008); First 4G WIMAX smartphone (November 2008)

Confirmed: Sprint to Support Google’s Nexus One

Nexus One Coming to Sprint

We told you last night about the e-mail we received from our little Sprint buddy pointing at a possible May release date for the Nexus One on Sprint and what happens today?  Sprint officially announces the Nexus One via their Twitter account.

Pricing and release date haven’t been disclosed, but Sprint’s press release makes it sound as if we’ll be seeing a subsidized Nexus One on Sprint.

Are you picking up a Sprint Nexus One?

Check out the full press release after the jump.

Rumor: Sprint Nexus One Coming

This just landed in our inbox take it for what’s it worth.

“Trying to lay low till May, but that said let me answer this for you. Sprint will carry their own Nexus One, and is in early production testing as we speak. Had it last week, but it was a little buggy. Hopefully, it’ll get mentioned and acknowledge at CTIA, but they will carry the device. Last carrier to do so as always, but probably will have the least problems. Peace.”

If this is true it would put the Sprint release at about the same time the Nexus One becomes available on Verizon.

Google’s Nexus One Now Available with AT&T & Rogers 3G Support

Well we kept hearing rumors yesterday that an AT&T 3G compatible Nexus One was going to be announced or launched today and well wouldn’t you know its been launched.

I know that if I were an AT&T customer who bought the T-Mobile Nexus One sans AT&T 3G compatibility I’d be pretty pissed off right about now. How many of you plan on picking up the AT&T or Rogers Wireless compatible Nexus One at the full pop of $529.00?  That’s right there’s no subsidized pricing for you AT&T or Rogers folks.

I’m sure the Verizon kids are a little upset about this release.

Vodafone UK to Directly Offer Google’s Nexus One

Hmm, maybe there is some truth to those rumors about Verizon directly selling the Nexus One after all.

It appears Vodafone will be the first carrier to directly offer Google’s Nexus One.  Perusing the Vodafone UK sight we came across this placeholder for the Nexus One.  The site allows you sign up for e-mail updates on availability and gives your the rundown on the Nexus One, however, a release date has not been confirmed. Vodafone only says that it’s “Coming soon.”

Could Google be revamping their marketing strategy for the Nexus One based on the downgraded sales forecasts from Goldman Sachs? Initial expectations were high: analysts had said as many as 3.5 million units would be sold in the first year. But with just 80,000 sold in the first month, according to mobile analytic group Flurry, figures have now been revised down to around a million.

What do you think, has Google revamped their sales model?  Or is, Vodafone just getting the word out about their launch of the Nexus One?

Vodafone UK has also confirmed they’ll be releasing the HTC Desire, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, and the HTC Legend sometime in April.
